From ancient Egypt to Victorian England, every empire has used “contract powers”. The first and only Turkish state to hire mercenaries is the Khazars. The Papacy is still guarded by Swedish mercenaries. At the end of the 11th century, there were mercenaries in the Byzantine army consisting of English, Frank, Norman, Venetian, Russian, Bulgarian, Alan, Serbian, Georgian, Armenian nationalities. In the 13th century, the Legionary Catalans were hired by Byzantium against the Ottoman and other Turkish principalities. We learn that they were used against the Turkish principalities in Western Anatolia. Establishing a Hassa army consisting of Turks called “Murtazika” (paid) during the Abbasid period was considered as a power against those of Persian origin.
