At the panel held in Ankara in cooperation with TESPAM and ASSAM, the justifications of Turkey's Operation Peace Spring in Syria were discussed.

Türkiye Energy Strategies and Policy Research Center (TESPAM) and the Association of Justice Defenders Strategic Studies Center (ASSAM) organized a panel on "The Current Situation in Syria from Energy, Security, Social and Political Perspectives and the Operation Peace Spring" hosted by Social Sciences University of Ankara. At the panel, Strategic Research Center President of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dr. Ufuk Ulutaş, TESPAM President Oğuzhan Akyener, CBRN Expert Prof. Dr. Levent Edge, Research Writer Dr. H. Hüseyin Uludağ, Former Military Judge Yusuf Çağlayan gave speeches.

“The welfare of the nation depends on the security of the state”

Giving the opening speech of the panel, Chief Advisor to the President and Retired Brigadier General Adnan Tanriverdi emphasized that the welfare of the nation depends on the security of the state. Noting that states have spheres of influence and countries with borders are of great importance due to Turkey's strategic and geopolitical spheres of influence, Tanrıverdi said: “With the beginning of the civil war in Syria, peace could not be achieved through the intervention of global powers in the region. Therefore, it strives to prevent the threat coming to it in Türkiye and to return nearly 3 million refugees from Syria to their homes.  Türkiye aims to ensure that there is no formation in the region that threatens it and that there is a free democratic administration. For this to happen, a new constitution must emerge in Syria and the Syrian public opinion must accept this constitution. In addition, the issue that needs to be emphasized here should be that the Syrians, who are immigrants, also contribute to the voting of this constitution.

“Türkiye provides support”

Head of the Center for Strategic Research, Dr. Ufuk Ulutaş, said that Syria should be worked on for a long time from now on. Stating that no country other than Turkey wants to take responsibility for the reconstruction of Syria, Ulutaş said that the Syrian issue will be on our agenda for a long time. Ulutaş noted that Syria, which has collapsed in zoning, economy, social, administrative and military issues, needs time to re-establish these institutions and expressed that the international community should take more responsibility. Stating that the energy potential in Syria is lower than that of Iraq, Oguzhan Akyener said that a safe zone can only be created by operating the oil in the regions controlled by Türkiye after the Operation Olive Branch, Euphrates Shield and Peace Spring. Akyener stated that the PYD has deliberately opened up space in Syria over time, noting that the existence and progress of DAESH is proof of this.

“We are aware of risks”

University of Health Sciences CBRN President Prof. Dr. Levent Kenar showed the effects of the use of chemical weapons to the participants by revealing the truth of the allegations that Türkiye carried out a chemical attack in Syria recently. Emphasizing that the evidence of a chemical attack cannot be destroyed, Zengin noted that Türkiye is aware of the risks and that they are preparing for a chemical attack.
